Fire Science Program
Course Descriptions:
Fire Science 1: This introductory course covers the principles and procedures used in fire services. Students will learn about fire behavior, firefighter safety, personal protective equipment, and the basic construction of buildings. They will also gain hands-on experience with response procedures for emergency incidents, making it an invaluable foundation for those interested in public safety careers.
Fire Science 2: Building on the skills from Fire Science 1, this advanced course delves into critical areas like wildland fire suppression, ventilation, water supply, and loss control. Students will explore advanced firefighting techniques, including how to manage potential hazards and human factors on the fire line, and they’ll receive training on the latest industry-standard equipment. (Starting in the 2025-2026 school year.)

DCSD is excited to announce our new Fire Science program, offered as part of our Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings at Whittell High School.
The Fire Science program equips students with essential fire science skills, including wildland fire behavior, fire suppression, fire prevention, CPR First Aid, and much more. Students will gain hands-on experience and industry certifications, train with fire service equipment while learning about building construction, hazardous materials, and emergency medical care.
With direct instruction from active professionals from Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, students will not only learn essential skills but also gain valuable insight into the fire service industry, preparing them for a rewarding career in public safety.
