What's New at GW in 26-27

What's changing?

  • New school hours: GW will be 8:40 a.m. – 3:18 p.m. 
  • Students will take 6 classes on campus each day and 1 daily distance (online) course.
  • Benefits to this change:
    • Our schedule is now more closely aligned with ZCES.
    • We'll be able to offer more math, science, and language courses.
    • Most courses that were previously combined (such as AP/Regular sections) will now be offered separately.
    • We will continue to maintain small class sizes and strong teacher-to-student ratios.
    • Advisory will now be every day as a skinny class (36min) 
    • Shorter in seat day for our students
    • Help reduce tardies and absences

About Daily Distance 

  • The online course is completed at home, not during the regular school day, with the exception of testing.
  • Students may work before school, after school, evenings, or weekends so, the schedule is flexible.
  • Courses are asynchronous, meaning students complete work at their own pace while meeting semester deadlines.
  • Students must complete the course by the end of the semester, but may finish early.
  • Students interested in earning additional credits can work with Counselor Nair to develop a plan at the beginning of the semester.
  • Student's Distance teacher will be one of our Whittell teachers who will be avaialbe to help them daily during advisory or after school.

Daily Distance Attendance Requirements (Monday -Thursday)

To receive attendance credit, students must:

  1. Complete a short Daily Google Form indicating they will work on their online course. (Students can log into this form while at school)
  2. Complete at least one course task each school day.
  3. If a student is absent during the school day they may still work on their distance course and be counted as present as long as they do the daily attendance form and complete at least one task. We encourage this to help students maintain attendance average at 90% or above.
  4. Students cannot subsitute work completed during non school days for attendance missed on a school day. However, they can work in their OLC course on non school days.

Student Support

  • Students can get help in person at school from their OLC teacher during Advisory.
  • Online course tests will be taken at school during Advisory.

Parent Access

Parents will be able to monitor their student's progress through Ementum's Parent Sensei. 

OLC Edementum Course Selection

Grade 9: Students will take Health & Computer Science (one each semester).
Grades 10–12: Students may choose from the attached High School Online Course list.
Students should complete the GForm for their grade level to let us know their prefered courses.

Exceptions

  • Seniors with early release may choose to take the online course or opt out after meeting with Mrs. Nair.
  • Students enrolled in a COE work experience course will use their distance learning period for that class and may choose to take an additional online course if desired.
  • We are working on adding a zero period.
